DEREK LOVES HOUSING WORKS…DOCUMENTARY
I am so proud to share this message with the Housing Works. For all of you that do not know, The Housing Works is the largest grassroots and minority controlled HIV/AIDS organization in the U.S. On the surface it appears to be a chain of fabulous thrift stores scattered throughout NYC, but for many, it is a chain of life.
When Housing Works board member, Joseph Magnone and his partner Eddie Garou approached me, I thought it was to promote the thrift stores as a unique shopping experience. But as we discussed the Housing Works mission in further detail, they knew we had to make a real testament of what this organization really stands for.
Housing Works was built by the passions of many to serve a forgotten community of homeless families and individuals living in NY with HIV/AIDS. They offer many programs, such as healthcare, housing, education and food services.
Through meetings and education I have grown to love this organization as much as I hope all of you will. I think that as we grow as a nation and as a community we have become much more aware that no one is immune to homelessness and/or the AIDS virus. Women are being infected more and more, numbers are rising at a staggering rate amongst African Americans and the youth of our nation is becoming slack on safe sex. While it is true that many infected people are living longer lives, it is up to us to HELP and TEACH these people and the community about this continuing epidemic and to INSPIRE everyone with hope for the future.
