Blogger of the Week: The World Tour
By Molly Heintz
Once in awhile, you run across someone who seems to have figured out the secret of life, and the secret, it seems, is nautical. You can discover it not in a jar of Creme de la Mer, but on The World Tour, a blog written by Taru Tuomi with her fiancé Alex, which is a glimpse into their simple but beautiful existence on the water. The Barcelona-based couple is planning to sail around the world beginning in October 2010, and in the meantime, they’re living on their 35-foot Hallberg Rassy sailboat and documenting the preparation for the voyage.
Tara is a photographer and web developer who writes several blogs, including a column for the Barcelona Guide and her own lifestyle blog. While Alex, who works in the music industry when on land, is a sailing pro who will captain their ship, christened “Caos.”
If you need a mini-vacation for a few minutes during a hectic workday, go to The World Tour for a selection of beautiful imagery featuring the sea, the sky, and dinners on deck of fresh-caught fish and shrimp. In between these gorgeous shots, the couple adds commentary that ranges from sailing tips to notes about the local wine to discussions of their upcoming route. Finnish-born Taru, who could be mistaken for Angelina Jolie, appears in some of the shots executing first mate duties, and the whole blog looks like an editorial that could appear in a more laid back version of Vogue.
Currently, the couple is bouncing around the Costa Brava area of eastern Spain, but come October, they will head west across the Atlantic, hoping to avoid any late season hurricanes. Over the course of 19 months, they plan to drop anchor in Caracas, Fiji, Tonga, Java, Karachi, and Cyprus, among many other exotic ports of call. If recent posts are any indication of what’s in store, here’s hoping that these stylish sailors will be blogging all the way.
