The New York Look Book – The Ingenue

By Justin St. Clair

Continuing my series on New York makeup looks, this week: The Ingénue

Ingénue? In New York City? You’ve got to be kidding me! She may be pure fantasy, but that’s why we love her. Whether you’re innocent or not so, you can bring out that freshness and simplicity that lives in you despite, age, armor, wile or wound.

We all love iconic ingénue Audrey Hepburn, but today’s NYC has evolved a new go-to look, exemplified by Miss Chanel Iman.

This look is all about the eyes and eyebrows, and there’s no perfection needed: in fact, if you’re a little quirky then this could be great for you.

  1. Keep your skin as natural as possible. Perhaps just a bit of concealer on any blemishes or under eye circles. Try Iman Cosmetics Corrective Concealer. Think clean, beautiful, pure skin.
  2. Go for a nice soft, but not messy, black eye pencil to do a kohl-rimmed eye. You need to get the black on the inner rim of your eyelids, so try this: apply the pencil to the lower lid rim by gently pulling the lid down and applying the pencil with your free hand. Next squeeze your eyes shut really, really tightly and then open. Some of the black should transfer from the lower lid to the upper lid. Reapply, and repeat until both upper and lower lids on both eyes are black. If you get smudges use a cotton bud moistened with a bit of moisturizer to clean up.
  3. The next step: eyebrows. Whether yours are bushy, modest, or even thin, they need to be defined. Get rid of the stray hairs with your tweezers and then use your pencil and lash wand to shape. Definitely Google an eyebrow shaping video to get a better sense of how to shape those bushies. Pencil-wise, I recommend Maybelline Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil. Unless your brows are light blonde or your skin is medium to dark try the medium brown color, it suits most!
  4. No blush, a touch of bronzer if you need some warmth, but all in all, pretty much bare. Little or no mascara. A touch of loose translucent powder on the T-zone. Then just lip balm to finish it all off. If your lips aren’t as full as they once were simply add a touch of your favorite natural colored lipstick to shape them up.

Pure and simple.
