Helping Hands: Up South’s Stories and Sounds Series
By Natasha Senko
DLS is very excited to show support for Up South, Inc. in its continued efforts of bringing the gift of written word and song to Harlem through its Stories and Sounds Series. Up South Inc., which was created in 2006, is an uptown based cultural arts organization who’s goal is to generate excitement about books, writers, artists, and their producers creating an annual literary oasis in upper Manhattan. Up South creates an outlet for these artists to tell their stories and share their experiences.
Up South’s Stories and Sounds Series is running from now until the fall. This week’s event, showcasing global Jamaican voices, is this Sunday, May 16th from 2:30 to 5pm. There will be 3 artists featured starting with Stefhan Bryan sharing his stories of “excess and exile in Japan,” with his memoir titled, Black Passenger, Yellow Cabs. Brooklyn-based author, Carol Taylor will do a reading from her novel, The Ex Chronicals. Abby Dixon will also be bringing her songwriting and vocals skills to the afternoon.
For just $5 at the door, you can experience all these presentations as well as drinks. This minimal price will leave you plenty of extra cash for fab food provided by Chef extraordinaire Stephanie Kelly, as well as books and cds. For more information check out Up South’s website or their Facebook page. To reserve your seat email bluemedia@aol.com.
Come out and show your support for such a wonderful addition of cultural recognition in New York City. See you Sunday!!
