Sail Away with a Nautical Zen Bathroom
By Natasha Senko
The nautical theme is all the rage in fashion for summer but it can also work well for you home. There are so many routes you can go, when it comes to nautical home décor. A couple weeks ago, we touched on the nautical living room, both modern and more traditional. Today let’s talk bathrooms.
Nautical theme bathrooms can go from minimalist decorative additions to full on over-the-top ship themes, but today we are going to discuss a nautical Zen approach incorporating some natural beach elements. Below are some dream ideas as well as some more practical options. Either avenue you take, you will have a bathroom fit for a beach house in no time.
Instead of using our typical royal blue and red accents, let’s us hues of baby blue, white, and driftwood. Stark white walls, a white tub and white pedestal sink are our canvas. Keeping with our baby blue theme, we add a solid baby blue shower curtain. You can integrate some beach elements with the addtion of some starfish or sand dollars. No need to scour the beach for these items as you can most likely purchase them at your local craft or garden supply shop. Wrap some twine around the center of the starfish or through one of the wholes in the sand dollar and secure one to each of the shower curtain rings. Lastly, place a white bathroom rug in front of the tub.
Next up is the sink area. In an ideal world, you will find a mirror that mimics a porthole on a boat. (Even better would be if it opens to reveal your medicine cabinet.) If the porthole is posing a problem, any round mirror will do. If you go the round mirror route, take some one-inch thick rope and glue it around the edges encompassing the mirror. Perhaps you have some giant clamshells from one of you previous beach excursions. One of these makes a perfect soap dish.
Need additional shelving for towels and other bathroom accoutrement? Again in our perfect world, you have some driftwood pieces you found on the beach. Have them cut into 2 to 3 foot pieces and in half so one side is flat and secure to the wall above the toilet or any wall you have available. If you perfect world driftwood doesn’t exist, find some small 2 to 3 foot shelving in a soft grayish or birch wood tone. Top shelves with baby blue and white folded towels and clear apothecary jars to house cotton balls and q-tips. Incorporate a jar or two with a collection of seashells and/or add some larger conch shells to break up the necessary bathroom monotony.
Add a few minimal art pieces in soft hues of blue, grey, white and soft pink and your Zen beach themed bathroom is complete. After your day of décor, its time for a soak in the tub with some bath salts. Close your eyes, take a breath and imagine yourself sailing away.
