Swim to Shore
By Johanna Laracuente, Wardrobe Stylist & Fashion Expert
When temperatures rise and all hell breaks loose in the scorching streets of Manhattan, its time to hop on the first plane, train or automobile, out of the city heat. We pack our survival kit and head to the closest beach, pool or patch of grass we can find. Pretty much anywhere we can throw a towel down and lay out without being arrested for indecent exposure, we will turn into our beach paradise for the day. But no matter if you end up in Mykonos, Long beach or the park next to a suit eating his lunch, “reading” the Wall Street Journal while staring at your boobs, you can look fierce and fab with the right tips no matter where your beach day takes you.
You Get What You Pay For
A good bathing suit will run you anywhere from $65-130. You can find cute designs at a lower price range but the quality, durability and most importantly, the support it will provide will never be the same. If you are not using it often and you do not require too much breast support or slimming then a less expensive option will be fine for you. But as a rule of thumb look for a high concentration of Lycra to Spandex for the best smoothing effect.
Take a Good Look in the Mirror
We all have areas we like to camouflage but the trick is to also enhance our assets in the process. You will not only look good but feel hot! Try on some old swimsuits and find all the things wrong with them as a starting point of what you are looking for in the new purchase.
Coverage and Style
Choose a suit that fits your lifestyle and body type. Who said plus girls can’t wear bikinis? Its about the shape of your body and believe me I know ladies size 18 with flatter tummies and less cellulite than some who are size 6. Check out the sexy assortment. If jiggly tummy is your pet peeve then a tankini might be right for you since it’s looser in that area. (Try this cute multi color Peace sign one.) A shirred tank will also help conceal and shape .If you need more tummy control try a Miracle suit at Macys one of my favorites is the Escape in red. A crossover bust line will minimize, a halter will give extra support with no wire or try one of Carol Wior’s one piece belted numbers with underwire support to keep those girls up even pool side.
Don’t forget to pay attention to the back, remember it’s a 360 look. We have to make sure the back is not to low for those of us with a little back fat (I have it so I can say it!) or to tight where it stretches the fabric and it looks a little sheer, accentuating any bumps or cellulite ( got those too!), BIG no no’s no matter your size!
Have Fun!
Don’t take yourself too seriously, it’s a bathing suit not your wedding gown! As long as you love it and feel good with it, who cares what others think! Look around you, girls big and small have some of your same insecurities and they choose to go have a blast on a sunny day, so take off the moo- moo and do the same! And don’t forget your sunscreen ladies, wrinkles at 25 are REALLY not cute!
