Take Me to the Cabana
By Natasha Senko
You feel the glow of the sun warming your skin. The soft breeze blowing against you just so with the scent of salty air as you lie in your beach chair daydreaming. Sounds almost perfect but what’s missing? An amazing cocktail, duh!! And what cocktail is more perfect than a refreshing caipirinha. Where’s the waiter?
Caipirinhas are the most famous cocktail in Brazil. Created from cachaca, a clear liquor made from fermented sugarcane, Caipirinhas consist of cachasa, sugar, lime and soda. (My mouth is watering just thinking about it.) I know some of you may be thinking “oh ya that’s rum right?” Wrong. One of rum’s main ingredients is molasses and rum is also heated in the distillation process, making cachaca that much more pure.
My favorite cachasa, by far, has to be Cabana Cachaca. It is an authentically Brazilian artisanal cachaca of the highest quality. (You know I would never steer you to anything but the best!!) So high that it won a Double Gold Medal in the 2009 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Its double distilling combined with its copper pot, nine month aging process creates one of the most premium cachasas in the world and in turn, one of the best caipirinhas you will ever lay your lips upon. Take a look at the Cabana Cachaca’s Caipirinha recipe below.
One of the best things about Cabana Cachaca, other than its delicious flavor, is they donate $1 from each bottle sold to the Developing Minds Foundation for education projects in the favelas (underprivileged neighborhoods) of Rio de Jeneiro. Now that’s just awesome and so in line with our message here at DLS. We heart Cabana Cachaca!!
