The Life Aquatic: Best Marine Scents for All
By Danielle De Feo
Ozonic and marine: It’s a hot scent trend that some love and some hate. Done badly, it can make you smell chemical. Done well it gives you a scent like a brisk breeze that works for women and men, is unusual and crisp. Naturally we will help you negotiate the minefield, and come out smelling great.
Our friends at perfume palace Luckyscent helped us choose some great ones.
Probably the finest marine scent on the market is Heeley’s Sel Marin. This is not a hot beach with coppertone and a swirling sea (if you want that go to CB I Hate Perfume in Brooklyn and go for a vial of At the Beach 1966…a review is in last month’s NY perfumerie highlights). Rather, this is a rugged, warm coastline with a salty breeze, with an Italian cologne influence. Citrus, salt and seaweed are warmed and grounded in a slightly tarry, slightly balsamic Birch and Vetiver combo. This is super for both boys and girls.
Italian all around artistic genius Hilde Soliani began as a theatre-set designer and her projects include cuisine and visual arts. With a background rooted in her hometown of Parma, her perfumes are emblems of her own experiences, and deeply communicative. Acquiilissssima is a delightful combination of a light, floral Jasmine, an earthy stripe of green tea and seaweed and then salt sprinkled over the top enhancing the flavours uniquely. A little more feminine but workable for all.
One of the most unique and delicious marine scents on the market is Costamor’s new offering, Beachwood. Costamor is a line of scents inspired by childhood memories of Costa Rica. I love this fragrance as a feminine marine that is seductive but fresh, and not too flighty. It combines light jasmine and citrus with a salty aquatic and dry wood for a fantastic set of opening notes, very evocative of a warm morning on the beach. What comes next is more exotic, and unexpected: a base that is delightfully soft with woods, amber and musk, and a little creamy coconut. A twist of lavender stops the whole thing being to mushy. Balanced, gorgeous and long-lasting on the skin.
These fragrances are hot for summer, but on the luxury end of the price range, so next week we get BUDGALiCIOUS: the Store-cupboard Beauty Queen is back with more tips for a beautiful you using your everyday items.

A great selection of seaside fragrances. I just tried the Heeley one for the first time today and really enjoyed it.
